Powerful winter gusts brought walls down onto flimsy shelters housing Palestinians displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than 4 people. These deaths underscores the dangerous situation that persist after over 24 months of devastating airstrikes and critical shortages of aid.

Truce Offers No Relief from Severe Elements

Although a ceasefire has been in effect from October, aid groups report that residents broadly lack the adequate housing required to survive frequent winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the bodies, reported on this week that the deceased include two women, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the local health authority stated on the same day that a 12-month-old infant died of extreme cold during the night.

"International actors has allowed us to experience loss of life in all its forms," said a family member after the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to the medical center, 3 members of a single family — elderly a man, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall fell onto their dwelling in a coastal area of the city. At least five others were hurt in the event.

Their relatives on Tuesday began removing the rubble that had entombed their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for survivors.

Aid Distribution and Ongoing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were handing out shelter kits, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothes as well as nutrition and sanitation items across Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of Palestinians live in improvised tents because their homes were turned into rubble during the war. Humanitarian organizations contend not enough building supplies are reaching Gaza during the truce.

"While 'bombings and gunfire have decreased' under the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson told reporters at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "So what the world now terms quiet would be viewed as a catastrophe anywhere else," he said.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than two million people has been struggling to keep the freezing temperatures and bad weather away while enduring lack of assistance and a absence of sturdier temporary housing, which is badly needed during the colder season. It’s the third winter since the conflict involving Israel and Hamas started on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into southern Israel and murdered around 1,200 individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.
