Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Bayern was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
