New England Warming Faster Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Analysis Shows.
The US region renowned for its colonial history, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is undergoing a swift transformation. New research shows that New England is warming more quickly than nearly any other place on the globe.
Unprecedented Pace of Transformation
The rate of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating region of the continental United States, according to the research. The pace of its warming has apparently accelerated significantly in the last half-decade.
"Temperatures is not only rising, it's speeding up," said a lead researcher on the project. "It's really sped up in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being largely consistent for thousands of years."
The research positions the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating zones in the world, together with the polar region and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now heading towards being like the south-eastern US," the scientist noted.
Analysis Approach and Findings
For the analysis, researchers examined three datasets on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The review covered the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They discovered that New England has warmed by an average of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.
"This represents very fast warming, which is worrying," commented the study author.
Notable Climate Patterns
- Minimum temperatures are rising faster than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are heating up at double the speed of other times of year.
- The severe cold New England is known for is being eroded.
Marine Influences and the "Energy Storage"
A major cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are taking in the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy captured by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an increase of meltwater from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Atlantic current. This is directing warmer water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the shoreline that is then pushed further inland by wind patterns.
"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being held in the sea like a huge storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a recipient of that heat."
Consequences on Culture and Extremes
Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has suffered severe weather shocks in recent years, including devastating flooding and prolonged dry spells.
The increasing temperatures endangers iconic elements of local culture:
- Syrup production is facing challenges by shifting seasonal patterns.
- Winter sports are impacted; an hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been canceled or relocated repeatedly due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Winter tourism have faced difficulties because of inadequate snow.
"I reside just outside Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the ponds regularly," said the researcher. "That tradition has largely vanished from much of southern New England."
