SNAP Payments Expected to Cease for Tens of Millions During Continuing Federal Shutdown
Federal agriculture authorities stated recently that SNAP funds through a critical national welfare initiatives will not be distributed during the coming month because of the continuing federal closure.
Shutdown Extends Through Its Third Week
The government shutdown was in its 25th day as officials revealed the news, coming after demands from hundreds of Democratic representatives urging the department to utilize emergency reserves to cover November's food assistance.
“The reality is, resources are exhausted,” officials announced. “Now, assistance will not be provided” starting next month.
Widespread Impact
Over 40 million Americans count on these food benefits, as reported by federal data. In certain states, such as New Mexico, reliance on the program reaches one-fifth of the population.
A memo obtained by journalists indicated that federal authorities would not access contingency funding for the upcoming payments.
Partisan Impasse
Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree about the way to finance and restart the federal government.
A statement from the leader of a budget research center indicated that federal leadership had chances to act sooner to ensure continuous assistance.
“They had the ability and responsibility taken steps weeks ago to get ready to utilize available money,” the statement continued. “Conversely, they might decide against it for potential political benefit” as Republicans seek to influence Democratic senators to approve a spending bill that would reopen the federal government.
States Prepare
Governors in two affected states declared states of emergency recently to free up resources to address food insecurity in anticipation of SNAP benefits not being issued in November.
