Study Reveals Over Four-Fifths of Alternative Healing Publications on Amazon Likely Produced by Artificial Intelligence
An extensive study has exposed that AI-generated text has penetrated the herbalism publication segment on the online marketplace, including items advertising cognitive support gingko formulas, stomach-calming fennel remedies, and "citrus-immune gummies".
Disturbing Numbers from AI-Detection Study
Per analyzing numerous titles released in the platform's alternative therapies subcategory between the first three quarters of 2024, analysts found that over four-fifths seemed to be created by artificial intelligence.
"This represents a damning disclosure of the extensive reach of unlabelled, unconfirmed, unchecked, potentially artificially generated material that has completely invaded Amazon's ecosystem," stated the investigation's primary author.
Expert Concerns About AI-Generated Wellness Information
"There is a huge amount of herbal research available right now that's completely worthless," commented a professional herbal practitioner. "Artificial intelligence won't know the process of filtering through all the dross, all the nonsense, that's completely irrelevant. It would direct users incorrectly."
Illustration: Popular Book Facing Scrutiny
An example of the seemingly AI-created titles, Natural Healing Handbook, currently holds the No 1 bestseller in the marketplace's skin care, essential oil treatments and natural medicines categories. The book's opening markets the volume as "a toolkit for individual assurance", encouraging users to "turn inward" for answers.
Questionable Author Background
The creator is named as an unverified writer, with a marketplace listing portrays the author as a "35-year-old herbalist from the seaside community of a popular Australian destination" and founder of the enterprise a herbal product line. However, no trace of this individual, the brand, or connected parties seem to possess any online presence beyond the platform listing for the title.
Recognizing Artificially Produced Material
Research noted multiple red flags that suggest possible automatically created alternative healing material, featuring:
- Liberal use of the nature icon
- Plant-related writer identities such as Rose, Nature words, and Herbal terms
- Citations to questionable alternative healers who have advocated unsupported treatments for major illnesses
Wider Pattern of Unchecked Artificial Text
These titles represent a broader pattern of unchecked AI content being sold on the marketplace. Previously, foraging enthusiasts were cautions to avoid mushroom guides available on the marketplace, ostensibly written by AI systems and including questionable guidance on identifying lethal fungus from safe ones.
Calls for Oversight and Identification
Publishing representatives have requested Amazon to commence identifying automatically produced material. "Any book that is fully AI-written should be labeled as such content and automated garbage must be removed as an urgent priority."
Reacting, the company stated: "Our platform maintains publication standards governing which books can be listed for acquisition, and we have preventive and responsive systems that assist in identifying material that violates our guidelines, whether artificially created or otherwise. We dedicate significant effort and assets to make certain our guidelines are followed, and remove publications that fail to comply to those standards."
