The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
