The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and cafecito as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
