The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal European tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
This talent is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes in pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," said Pitarch after his first appearance.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand fans might be astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.
Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.
Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
