What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
